June SEO Updates: Google AI Mode and Core Updates

2025 has been a busy year for all things search and June wasn’t any different.

Don’t worry if you spent a bit more time in the sun away from the computer last month, our SEO experts have collected the biggest headlines and SEO news from June just for you. Join us as we rundown what happened in the digital marketing world throughout June and what it means for your business.

Google Core Update June 2025

The biggest SEO news last month was the start of Google’s second core update of the year. Following their first round of changes back in March, the update started on June 30th and completed on July 17th.

Alongside the announcement of this new update, Google commented:

“There’s nothing new or special that creators need to do for this update as long as they’ve been making satisfying content meant for people”

Google often accompanies their core update announcements with these disclaimers to stop SEO professionals from starting to panic every time a change to the Google algorithm is announced. There is often no need to change your entire digital strategy every time a Google update occurs; however, you shouldn’t completely ignore it.

What Does This Mean for You?

If your current content strategy aligns with the purpose of this update, to push user-friendly, helpful web content, you won’t need to take any action.

However, we encourage you to continue monitoring the performance of your site and search ranking, your content may need modifying slightly to restore performance and ensure you’re providing useful content to your users.

With these core updates, the changes often aren’t obvious however, the emphasis on the ‘people’ element of search may indicate the direction which future Google updates may be heading.

Google AI Mode Continues to Grow

Another part of June’s SEO industry news was the continued development of AI mode, Google’s fully artificial intelligence-integrated search experience. While the feature is still in its infancy, it is clearly the focus of Google’s search developments.

AI Mode Launches in India

To show the growth of Google’s updated search experience, AI Mode has now arrived in the most populated country in the world, India. After initially launching in the US, Google AI mode is now available internationally for the first time as part of the feature’s continued development. Speaking about the launch of AI Mode in India, Google’s VP of Search, Nick Fox, noted:

“This is our first international expansion of AI Mode, and we’ll be adding more features over time.”

If you’re still confused about how Google AI Mode is going to impact your online strategy, don’t worry. While Google’s new feature is yet to roll out globally, we know exactly how it’ll work when it hits new territories.

AI Mode consists of a ‘query fan-out’ technique, a fancy way of saying that the AI looks beyond your initial request with a variety of related searches to build context and inform its answer. This means that if you want to stay ahead of the curve, you should be ensuring that you content is covering as many sub-topics as possible, addressing any questions your audience may have.

Voice Search Comes to AI Mode

Another Google update which came to AI Mode last month was the introduction of voice search. Known as Search Live, users can interact with Google’s AI mode by vocalising their query and asking to hear the response.

This feature is designed to improve accessibility and usability for Google AI Mode, allowing users to elaborate upon the AI generated response. The aim is to improve the reliability and clarity of the responses from AI Mode and is another step towards full AI integration into every aspect of Google’s search journey.

Cloudflare Blocks AI Bots

June’s SEO news was not all just championing AI as the future of search; across the industry there remains several concerns regarding how these companies are collecting user data.

Cloudflare, a major provider of content delivery networks and other web services, announced that they would be blocking AI firms from crawling and snatching information from websites unless they’ve been granted permission from the publisher. The introduction of a ‘pay-per-crawl’ marketplace would force AI firms to pay for access to certain sites and has been welcomed by websites which publish large quantities of data such as Reddit and Buzzfeed.

While it is unclear whether user data protection or capital gain is the motivation for Cloudflare’s decision, it shows that the data published online is valuable to its creators and shouldn’t be freely harvested by AI bots without compensation.
